Plakias is a popular tourist resort, located 36km south of Rethymnon. The main beach is well organized, with cool green waters.
The small town is very well organized, offering plenty restaurants, bars, shopping centers, water sports and many more. There is also a marina, ideal for peaceful walks.
Apart from the main long beach there are many other beaches close by to visit.
The first official reference to Plakias was made in 1961, when it was recorded in an inventory as a permanent residence of six fishermen. At the eastern side of Plakias we meet the old tunnels used in the past for transporting coal through a rail.
