Location
The valley of Amari is formed between the ranges Kedros and Psiloritis. It is the natural passage from the northern prefecture of Rethymno to the south and the plain of Messara with altitude ranging around 500 meters and has a length of about 25 kilometers. Due to its strategic location, it was the theater of many historical events, especially during the Othoman occupation.
The valley is adorned with picturesque villages.
Amari is one of the areas with the most rainfall in Crete and this is the reason of its name, as “amara” is an ancient Greek word that means, water canal.
In the areas, there is the river Platis that starts from Amari and goes to Agia Galini, while there is also one of the largest dams in Crete, the dam of Potami. Minoan settlements, Byzantine churches, and wild mountains are scattered throughout the prefecture. The gorge of Patsos with the cave of Agios Antonios, the Minoan settlements in Monastiraki and Apodoulou, the ancient city of Sivritos and the monastery of Asomata are some of the must-seen sights of Amari.
